There are many areas you need to consider when starting up a new website or evaluating your current site. You could be setting up an online business, a basic brochure website or a blog – but despite the varied nature of these websites, they all involve specific planning and preparation, one of which is your websites defining keywords.

Keywords are a vital part to any website as it greatly assists with your SEO which boosts your organic listing on a search engine. In short, the more relevant keywords you have in your content, the more noticeable you will be to those searching for you.

There are four main areas that must be addressed when deciding on your websites niche and keyword. This means, your website will revolve around this topic for the following reasons: they are relevant to your website, the keyword has a good level of traffic, the keyword has a good amount of competition and commerciality.

Relevance of keywords and content
First and foremost, we will start with relevance; a simple and necessary step in starting any new online business, however, it is commonly overlooked.
There are far too many websites that target irrelevant keywords, and while you may obtain a top 10 spot on the Google rankings and plenty of traffic to your website, you probably won’t see a high conversion rate.
This is because your content doesn’t accurately match the keywords that people are typing into a search engine.
It’s easy to say traffic is good but it’s not the secret to success – especially if you aren’t making any sales - what your website really wants is target traffic.
By identifying the keywords which are most relevant to your website content, you should attract targeted traffic and subsequently get more enquiries or make more sales.

Incoming traffic
The second area you should address is the amount of websites that compete for your keyword.
Keywords are sub categories of niches, so before deciding what keywords you want your website to target; you need to find out what niche your website covers. For example, the Kiss Digital website niche is web design.
There are a variety of keyword phrases that fall under a niche, and all have different values based on how many people search for a keyword on any given day.
When starting a new site, many website owners select keywords at random and as a result, the content and the keywords don’t relate.
There can be hundreds if not thousands of keywords for every niche, and around 90% of those keywords receive insignificant traffic compared to the other 10% which receives good levels of traffic.
The trick is to find the top 10% of keyword phrases which ensures your website should receive good traffic flow.

Amount and strength of competition
As we have just discussed, the best way to get traffic to your website is to obtain a front page ranking on a search engine.
Using Google as an example, you will notice that only 10 websites make it on to page one – and quite often there are dozens of websites competing for a page one ranking.
There are two things to consider when viewing the competition of your chosen keyword phrase, one is the amount of competition and the other is the strength of the competition.
You want to target keywords that fall in the 10% we discussed earlier; however, they should slightly vary from the norm. For example, Kiss Digital’s keyword is Christchurch web design, however you could target phrases such as Christchurch graphic design, websites, SEO or any other keywords that fall under the web design niche.
You should target keywords with weak competition as you have a better chance of obtaining a top 10 spot on page one of Google which will lead to a steady stream of visitors.
You can usually find these keywords by looking at the websites that make it to page one on Google, and if they are relatively new and basic, then you generally have a good shot at making it into the top 10 results.

Commerciality of your keyword
Commerciality is perhaps the most important aspect you should focus on as it holds the key to increased revenue.
Keywords with high commerciality have a strong monetary flow, therefore if you successfully tap into a keyword phrase with high commerciality then it should result in more sales.
A good way to find out the cost of a keyword is to test out the phrase in Google Adwords to see what advertisements for the same keyword are currently spending for each click (CPC).

By incorporating all four of these main points, you should find yourself soaring up the search rankings.
You can use various web pages and software to find the following content you need.
However, if you want the team at Kiss Digital to do all the leg work for you, then don’t hesitate to get in touch.
